# Managing published and prior versions

Each project has one published version. Previously published versions are prior versions.

To set the published version, you can either:

* Publish a draft version.
* Promote a prior version to be the published version.

You can delete prior versions. You cannot delete the published version.

## Publishing a draft version

To publish a draft version:

1. Click the publish icon.

2. On the publish panel, in the **Notes** field, provide any new or updated notes for the published version. The field includes any existing notes for the version.

2. By default, in a published version, data for local databases is write-protected. To allow changes to the data, toggle **Write-protect data** to the off position.
3. To also create a new draft version when you publish this version, check the **Also create a new draft** checkbox. The draft version is based on this version.
4. Click **Publish**.

You can also prompt the Agent to publish the version. For example:

`Publish the current version. Do not write-protect the data, and do not create a draft version.`

## Promoting a prior version

To promote a prior version to be the published version:

1. From the version dropdown list, select the prior version.
2. Click the version options menu.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.tonic.ai/fabricate/projects/project-versions/managing-published-and-prior-versions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
